World Down's Syndrome Awareness Month, October 2022
Hands up if you see a child? Hands up if you see what they CAN do! We want to make the possibilities endless for our children. Hands up if you want that too!
National Lottery Community Fund Wales
We are well into our second year of our Speech and Language Therapy grant funded by the National Lottery Community Fund Wales. The progress our children are making with the one to one weekly sessions is marked. Without funding like this our children wouldn’t have the support to develop their ways of communication, express themselves and interact with others. An enormous thank you to all the National Lottery players and The National Lottery Community Fund Wales for making such a big difference to our childrens’ lives.
Summer of Fun 2022
A huge, huge thank you to Swansea Council for awarding us the Summer of Fun grant enabling our children to access a range of activities this Summer including Forest School, Introduction to Ponies and a led walk, Climbing and Rubba-Bubba sensory play sessions for our younger members. Our children will be able to explore the outdoors, learn new skills, develop their fine and gross motor skills and meet up with each other developing their social skills whilst having lots of fun. Summer 2022 is certainly going to be a Summer of Fun!

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 is a global awareness event and every year it is celebrated on 21 March. It has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome.
𝗪𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆?
The second photo above is a visual representation of chromosomes - they look a bit like pairs of socks! The set that is different has 3 of chromosome 21, instead of 2. That’s what makes someone have Down Syndrome or Trisomy 21.
The 21st of March (21x3 get it?!) is World Down Syndrome Day. We try to spread awareness and start conversations by wearing brightly coloured socks on that day and sharing images and stories online.
Please join us and even if you don’t do the sock thing just have a quick conversation with your child or a friend about Down Syndrome and disability.
Awareness, love and understanding is what we need
Each year the voice of people with Down Syndrome and those who live and work with them grows louder. Join in with us to create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well being of people with Down Syndrome, tomorrow 21st March and every day.

Together Again
Our children and families have very much enjoyed being back together again! Albeit in strictly reduced Covid safe numbers ... out enjoying fresh air and the great outdoors once again at Forest School sessions.
As you will see from this video, made by our parent member Lili, a good time was had by all! Videos and photos from our families capturing the pure joy of being back to some of our activities and the fun that was had by all who attended.
Thank you so so much to SNPT Forest School for all your hard work in ensuring the sessions could proceed with all necessary safety measures in place and for once again providing us with such amazing sessions for our families! We are so very grateful.

Hands Up For Down's Halloween House HikeA massive thank you to everyone who has supported our Hands up for Down's Halloween House Hike. We set out to virtually climb the Welsh Three Peaks which is a distance of 37km however we actually covered a staggering 41.5km and raised an incredible £7500! This will make a huge difference to the services we can provide for our children especially during these uncertain times.

During the Down's Syndrome Awareness month of October, the children and families of Hands up for Down's are looking to complete a spooky fancy dress Halloween House Hike over the next few weeks in the lead up to the 31st October. Due to the local lockdowns, and the fact that many of our members have been shielding, we will collectively attempting to virtually climb Pen-Y-Fan (3km), Mount Snowdon (11km) or even the Three Peaks (37km) with our children by stair and hall hiking, crawling or even shuffling! Children with Down's Syndrome have low muscle tone and often reduced mobility, and this would be a huge achievement if we only climb Pen-Y-Fan as this would mean 750 stair climbs of an average 4m stairs! We are looking to raise much needed funds so that we can continue to deliver the life changing services such as Speech and Language Therapy that has formed the main stay of input for our children during COVID due to the fact that we have been able to deliver virtually, alongside online peer support sessions and vital training. As our Charity has no fixed premises, and relies solely on volunteer support we have not been eligible for any Government support packages and we have been hugely affected by COVID, especially as we have had to cancel our 2020 Charity Ball which provides our biggest fundraising opportunity. We would be so grateful if you would considering donating to help us raise our target to ensure that we can continue providing vital services to children with DS throughout this uncertain and vulnerable time - we promise you some fun along the way with videos and pics on our Social Media Platforms!
